"Truth or Dare" is a song by South African singer Tyla from her debut studio album Tyla (2024).[2][3] It was released through Fax and Epic Records as a promotional single alongside two other songs on 1 December 2023, before impacting rhythmic contemporary radio in the United States on 13 February 2024 as the album's second single.[4][5]

Directed by Nabil, the accompanying music video for the song premiered on 2 February 2024.[6] In promotion of the single, Tyla performed the song on the season 24 finale of The Voice and on the 2024 Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve television special. Commercially, the song topped the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart and peaked within the top five on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, in addition to peaking in the top twenty on the Billboard South Africa Songs chart.

Background and promotion

The song was teased on the singer's Instagram account with a video captioned "Truth or Dare. Pre-save, December 1", the clip portrays Tyla breaking up with her partner due to her newfound fame.[7] Filmed in Portland, Jamaica with creative direction from Thato Nzimande,[8][9] an official visualizer for the track was released on 15 December and sees the singer using a payphone to contact an ex-partner while on a late night walk.[10]

Composition

"Truth or Dare" is an R&B song with amapiano influences,[11][10] characterized by guitar riffs, Tyla's "candied" vocals, as well as rhythmic and bass-heavy percussion.[12]

Music video

The music video was directed by Nabil and premiered on 2 February 2024. The video begins with Tyla getting ready to go out with her friends for a night out. Her ex-boyfriend shows up wanting her back, she grabs her lipstick out of his car and goes in her friend's car and drives away. Her ex-boyfriend chases her vehicle and speeds on the road. He gets out of his car along with Tyla who seduces him then steals his car keys and drives away in her friend's car. The ex-boyfriend is caught up by police cars and the video ends with Tyla laughing.[13][14][15][16]

Live performances

Tyla first performed the song live as part of a medley with "Water" on the season 24 finale of The Voice on 19 December 2023,[17] and then again in a medley with "On and On" and "Water" during the 2024 Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve television special.[18]
